Critical Care & Referred Emergencies

Southpaws critical care team are dedicated veterinarians, nurses and support staff providing round-the-clock care to our patients and referred cases.

Unlike some 24 hour hospitals we do not provide an emergency service direct to the public so our teams remain focused on our patients at all times.  Common cases include pre and post-surgical, medical and oncological patients who require monitoring or additional support for unexpected changes and complications. Instead, we provide support to our referral veterinary community by receiving referred emergencies and high dependency case transfers when the level of care required exceeds their availability or resourcing.

We have advanced technology for diagnostic imaging and laboratory investigations, continuous patient monitoring and experts in intensive care, surgery and oncology to support patient needs. Onsite equipment includes multi-parameter monitoring devices, complete Idexx laboratory with Radiometer Blood Gas analyser along with modern CT, digital x-ray and ultrasound capabilities.

Our team are trained and equipped in a range of minimally invasive techniques and procedures to optimise patient care and recovery from fractures to nutritional support, foreign body retrieval and curative interventions.

Critical care cases often require advanced interventions with specialised skill sets such as tracheostomy tubes and mechanical ventilation, treatment and support for haemorrhage and anaemia, seizure monitoring and management and other acute/chronic variations of renal failure; diabetic ketoacidosis; unstable diabetics; complex endocrine disorders; blood transfusions.

The team at Southpaws are trained and available to provide this important care, 24 hours a day.
