Anaesthesia

At Southpaws, we believe incomprehensive multidisciplinary care for our patients.

Anaesthesiais a common part of veterinary medicine and performs a critical in achieving positive health outcomes across a range of investigations, treatments, surgeries and procedures.

Anaesthesia is not just about keeping patients “asleep”,it is a carefully orchestrated process that ensures safety, comfort, and optimal recovery.

As a referral hospital, we treat many patients that are not in perfect health. All anaesthesia has a risk profile associated with the patient themselves as well as the duration and complexity of the intervention being performed.

These risk profiles are specific to each patient and is assessed using the ASA Grading system .

Our anaesthesia team must consider many factors such as age, underlying disease(s) and even specific breeds.

Expert anaesthesia enables Southpaws to provide optimal support for breeds such as brachycephalic (short-nosed) cats and dogs including surgeries such as BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome) as well as critically injured poly-trauma cases. We can provide tailored plans to support our older friends particularly those already managing health problems such as endocrine and heart disease.

As well as expertise in anaesthesia, our team are extensively trained and qualified in pain management.

Our patients receive analgesia (pain relief) based on their specific needs, condition and circumstances to ensure reduced discomfort throughout their treatment and recovery.
